Back 2 School: Why are Textbooks so expensive?

If you ask any college student what they spend the majority of their variable money on (as opposed to fixed spending, like tuition and a meal plan) its textbooks.

As we noted earlier this week, when discussing textbooks, there are many different ways to go about getting a textbooks, and for most people's situations, this will work perfectly. But what happens when your professor insists on the latest edition of a text, or worse, is the author of said text?

I spoke to a professor once who had a published textbook, and she said that every year, the publishing house pushed her to release a new edition of the textbook with minimal changes, for a brand new sticker price.

So, where is the money for textbooks going? This chart details a breakdown as to where different costs go in relation to textbooks.

I found this video of a coalition that strives to bring awareness to the high cost of textbooks (something college students are all too aware of). Check it out, and let me know what you think in the comment section!
